Description

This warm and comforting apple dump cake combines fresh, tart apples with a spiced cake mix for a dessert that is incredibly easy to prepare. With a buttery, golden-brown crust and a tender fruit filling, it is the perfect no-fuss treat for any occasion.


Ingredients

  • 7-8 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended), peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) spice cake mix
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, thinly sliced


Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan thoroughly with butter.
  2. Peel and slice the apples into 1/4-inch pieces and layer them evenly in the bottom of the prepared pan.
  3. Sprinkle the white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg over the apples and toss gently to coat.
  4. Pour the dry spice cake mix evenly over the apple layer, spreading it out to the edges without stirring.
  5. Place the thin slices of butter across the top of the cake mix, covering as much surface area as possible.
  6. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes until the fruit is bubbling and the top is a deep golden brown, adding extra butter to any dry spots halfway through.

Notes

For the best texture, ensure your butter slices are very thin and spread evenly to avoid dry flour patches. If you prefer a more rustic dessert, you can leave the peels on the apples for added fiber and color. Always let the cake rest for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow the apple juices to set into a delicious syrup.
