Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 3 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
- 4 cups confectioner’s sugar (for frosting)
- 1 tsp butter flavoring (for frosting)
- 2 tbsp milk (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease and flour two cake pans liberally.
- In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and room temperature butter with an electric mixer until the mixture is light and pale.
- In a medium bowl, stir the flour, baking powder, and salt together with a spoon.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, 1 cup of milk, and vanilla until they are well combined.
- Add half of the dry flour mixture and half of the wet milk mixture to the creamed butter and mix until just combined.
- Add the remaining halves and continue mixing until the batter is smooth and fully blended, about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the center springs back.
- Cool cakes in pans for ten minutes, then cream the frosting butter and sugar with butter flavoring and extra milk until smooth and creamy.
Notes
To ensure the best texture, always use room temperature eggs and butter so the batter emulsifies properly. If you want a perfectly flat top for stacking, use a serrated knife to gently level the cakes once they have cooled completely. For a decorative touch, add colorful sprinkles to the frosting just before serving.
