Description
Create a stunning soccer-themed birthday surprise with this easy one-pan sheet cake. Using a rich buttercream frosting and simple piping techniques, you can transform a classic base into a lush green pitch that every young sports fan will love.
Ingredients
- 3 standard packages cake mix (or homemade equivalent)
- Unsalted butter, room temperature
- Pure icing sugar, sifted
- Vanilla extract
- Salt
- Warm water
- Gel food colouring (green and white)
- Soccer figurines (players, nets, ball)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced) and grease a 23 x 33cm cake pan, lining it with overhanging baking paper.
- Prepare the cake batter according to instructions, pour into the pan, and bake for approximately 1 hour or until a skewer comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Beat the room temperature butter for 6 to 8 minutes until pale, then mix in icing sugar, vanilla, salt, and warm water until fluffy.
- Level the cake with a knife, flip it onto a serving board, and apply a thin green-tinted crumb coat of buttercream.
- Pipe the remaining green frosting using a grass nozzle and use a plain nozzle with white frosting to draw the pitch lines before adding figurines.
Notes
Ensure your butter is truly soft before beating to achieve the lightest possible texture for your buttercream. If the icing is too firm to flow through the grass nozzle, add an extra teaspoon of warm water at a time until it reaches a workable consistency. This sheet cake is very sturdy, making it a reliable option for transport to parties or school events.
