Description

This decadent chocolate poke cake is a simple yet thoughtful dessert made by elevating a standard box mix with whole milk and extra egg yolks. Soaked in a sweet mixture of condensed milk and chocolate syrup, it is topped with a light whipped frosting and crunchy candy pieces for a truly comforting treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 box milk chocolate cake mix
  • 3 whole eggs
  • 1 extra egg yolk
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate syrup, divided
  • 8 oz whipped topping (Cool Whip)
  • 1/2 cup Snickers baking bites, halved
  • 1/4 cup shaved chocolate pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch glass baking pan with butter, then dust it with a thin layer of Dutch-process cocoa powder.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the milk chocolate cake mix, three eggs, one extra yolk, whole milk, and vegetable oil, whisking just until the ingredients are incorporated.
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for approximately 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes, then use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes about one inch apart across the entire surface of the cake.
  5. Slowly drizzle the sweetened condensed milk and half of the dark chocolate syrup over the warm cake, allowing the liquid to soak into the holes.
  6. Cover the cake and refrigerate for at least 3 hours, then spread the whipped topping over the surface and garnish with Snickers bites, shaved chocolate, and the remaining chocolate syrup before serving.

Notes

For the best texture and flavor, prepare this cake a full day in advance to allow the sweet soak to thoroughly permeate the sponge. Using room temperature eggs and milk will ensure a smoother batter and a more even crumb. If you don’t have Snickers bites, any chopped chocolate bar or toffee bits will provide a delicious crunchy contrast to the creamy topping.
