Description
This eye-popping comic cake uses clever black outlines and vibrant fondant panels to create a 2D cartoon effect that looks like a drawing come to life. Beneath the illusion lies a rich crunchy peanut butter sponge layered with velvety dark chocolate ganache for a sophisticated salty-sweet finish.
Ingredients
- Butter
- Sugar
- Crunchy peanut butter
- Eggs
- Self-raising flour
- Baking powder
- Milk
- Vanilla extract
- Double cream
- Light brown sugar
- Sea salt
- Dark chocolate (54%)
- Egg white
- Royal icing sugar
- Black gel food coloring
- Fondant (White, Pink, Yellow, Red)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 190°C (170°C fan/375°F) and grease a 20cm cake tin.
- Beat together the butter, sugar, peanut butter, eggs, flour, baking powder, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth, then bake for 20–25 minutes until springy.
- Make the ganache by heating double cream, light brown sugar, butter, and sea salt until simmering, then pour over the dark chocolate and stir until glossy.
- Prepare the outline icing by whisking the egg white with royal icing sugar and black gel color until smooth, then transfer to a piping bag with a writing nozzle.
- Cut the cooled cake into quarters and stack them with ganache to create a wedge shape, coating the entire exterior in ganache before chilling until firm.
- Apply white fondant to the straight sides and pink fondant to the curved top, trimming the pink layer in a wavy line to look like dripping icing.
- Add small fondant details for fillings and a cherry on top, then pipe black royal icing outlines along every edge and detail to create the 2D effect.
Notes
For the cleanest 2D effect, ensure your cake wedge is chilled and firm before applying the fondant to prevent the sides from bulging. When piping the black ‘ink’ lines, maintain a steady pressure and practice on a piece of parchment paper first to ensure your lines are crisp and cartoon-like.
