Description

This easy-to-follow recipe transforms a simple yellow cake mix into a decadent, bakery-quality dessert using rich ingredients like buttermilk and sour cream. With a moist texture and a hint of vanilla, it is a dependable classic that pairs perfectly with any frosting.

Ingredients

  • 15.25 oz yellow cake mix
  • 4 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease two 8-inch or 9-inch round cake pans with non-stick baking spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, buttermilk, sour cream, and vanilla extract until well blended.
  3. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  4. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 15 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For the best texture, ensure your eggs and buttermilk are at room temperature before mixing to create a smooth, even batter. If you are out of buttermilk, you can create a quick substitute by mixing one cup of whole milk with one tablespoon of lemon juice and letting it sit for five minutes.
