Description

Experience the perfect blend of a buttery, chewy base and a decadent cream cheese topping with this simple Ooey Gooey Butter Cake. It is an effortless, one-bowl dessert that delivers a rich, custard-like texture and honest, comforting flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup salted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 5 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 ¾ cups flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 ½ cups sugar, 1 egg, ½ cup melted butter, 2 tablespoons milk, and ½ tablespoon vanilla until a soft dough forms.
  3. Press the dough mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth, then add 2 eggs, ¼ cup melted butter, and ½ tablespoon vanilla.
  5. Gradually mix in 5 cups of powdered sugar until the topping is thick and creamy.
  6. Spread the topping over the base layer and bake for 35 to 40 minutes until edges are golden but the center still jiggles.
  7. Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan before dusting with extra powdered sugar and slicing into squares.

Notes

To achieve the signature gooey texture, be careful not to overbake the cake; the center should still move slightly when removed from the oven. Using room temperature cream cheese is essential for a smooth topping, and using a metal pan will help ensure even heat distribution for the base layer.
