Description

This beginner-friendly Spider-Man cake uses a simple cut-and-trace method to transform a basic round cake into a professional-looking superhero mask. Perfect for birthday celebrations, it combines a reliable cake base with easy-to-use fondant for a memorable and heroic treat.


Ingredients

  • 1 10-inch round or rectangle cake
  • 2 cups buttercream or store-bought frosting
  • 24 oz red fondant
  • 4 oz black fondant
  • 4 oz white fondant
  • Small bowl of water


Instructions

  1. Bake your cake and allow it to cool completely on a wire rack to ensure it is firm enough for carving.
  2. Place a paper Spider-Man face template on the cake and use a sharp knife to cut around the shape, then trim the top edges to create a rounded face profile.
  3. Apply a thin crumb coat of frosting over the entire cake to seal in crumbs and provide a sticky surface for the fondant.
  4. Knead the red fondant until soft, roll it to 1/8-inch thickness, and drape it over the cake, smoothing it carefully with your hands.
  5. Cut out eye shapes from the black and white fondant using your template and attach them to the face using small dabs of water.
  6. Roll very thin strings of black fondant to create the web pattern on the mask and secure them to the red base with a damp brush.

Notes

To achieve the cleanest cuts when shaping your cake, try chilling it in the freezer for about 20 minutes before carving. When applying the fondant webbing, use water very sparingly to prevent the black color from bleeding into the red base.
