Description

This vibrant 4th of July Trifle is a show-stopping no-bake dessert featuring layers of airy angel food cake, fresh seasonal berries, and a decadent white chocolate pudding. It’s the perfect stress-free centerpiece for summer celebrations, offering a creamy, patriotic treat that feeds a crowd with minimal effort.

Ingredients

  • 2 packages (3.4 oz each) instant white chocolate pudding mix
  • 4 cups cold milk
  • 1 large store-bought angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 pounds fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 2 pints fresh blueberries
  • 2 containers (8 oz each) frozen whipped topping, thawed

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk the instant white chocolate pudding with cold milk for 2 minutes according to package directions; refrigerate until set.
  2. Place a single layer of angel food cake cubes at the bottom of a 3.25-quart trifle bowl.
  3. Spoon half of the set white chocolate pudding over the cake, then layer with sliced strawberries and blueberries, pressing some fruit against the glass for a visual effect.
  4. Spread one full container of thawed whipped topping evenly over the berry layer.
  5. Repeat the layers by adding the remaining cake cubes, the rest of the pudding, and another layer of berries.
  6. Finish with the second container of whipped topping and decorate with any leftover berries; chill for at least 1 hour before serving.

Notes

To ensure your trifle remains perfectly layered and the cake stays light, make sure your fruit is completely dry after rinsing before assembly. If preparing this a day in advance, wait to add the final decorative berries on top until just before serving to maintain a clean, polished look.

The Flavor Stars

The secret to this simple treat is leaning into a few brilliant shortcut ingredients and fresh produce! Here is what you need to create this flavor pop:

  • Instant White Chocolate Pudding & Milk: The unexpected star! White chocolate adds a beautiful, creamy depth that standard vanilla just can’t match.
  • Angel Food Cake: Store-bought works wonderfully here. It acts as a sweet, fluffy sponge to soak up all those gorgeous berry juices.
  • Fresh Strawberries & Blueberries: Our bright, fresh flavor pops that also bring the perfect patriotic colors!
  • Whipped Topping: For that light, airy finish that ties it all together.

The Simple Process

Step 1: Prep the White Chocolate Layer

Whisk your instant white chocolate pudding with cold milk according to the package directions. Pop it in the fridge to chill until it sets up perfectly.

Step 2: Build the Cake Base

In a large trifle bowl (about 3.25 quarts), arrange a single layer of your 1-inch angel food cake cubes right at the bottom.

Step 3: Add the Pudding and Berries

Spoon half of your chilled white chocolate pudding smoothly over the cake cubes. Line sliced strawberries against the glass for a beautiful look, then add a layer of strawberries and a layer of blueberries over the pudding. Make sure your berries are patted completely dry to keep the layers distinct!

Step 4: Add the Whipped Topping

Spread one whole container of thawed whipped topping evenly over your fresh berries.

Step 5: Repeat and Decorate

Repeat your layers: cake cubes, the remaining white chocolate pudding, and another round of berries. Finish with your second container of whipped topping. Decorate the top with any leftover berries for a stunning presentation! Chill for at least 1 hour before serving.

To keep your beautiful layers crisp, always pat your rinsed berries completely dry with a paper towel before assembling. Excess water can make your beautiful sponge cake soggy, and we want our party cakes & events to stay fresh and vibrant!

For an extra fun flavor pop, try adding a tiny splash of almond extract to your milk before whisking the pudding. It plays so beautifully with the white chocolate and fresh berries!

Simple Flavor Swaps

This recipe is your blank canvas, so feel free to make it yours! If you cannot find white chocolate pudding, cheesecake flavored pudding is another fantastic swap that adds a lovely tang.

You can also swap the angel food cake for a buttery pound cake if you want a richer texture, just like we do in some of our classic favorites. For another wonderful take on layered patriotic desserts, check out this beautiful patriotic trifle from our friends!

Bring this beauty straight to the picnic table chilled—it tastes best when nice and cold. I love serving this alongside a fun spread of cute & quick bakes to give my guests plenty of sweet options.

Garnish the top with a few sprigs of fresh mint right before serving. It adds a bright, herbaceous pop that contrasts wonderfully with the sweet berries and white chocolate!

The Sweet Spot

Making a stunning holiday dessert really can be this simple and stress-free! That white chocolate flavor pop is going to have everyone coming back for seconds. If you love fresh berry desserts, you have to try some of our other fruit & garden treats!
