Ingredients
- 1 box white cake mix (plus eggs, oil, and water required by package)
- 2 boxes (3.4 oz each) instant cheesecake pudding mix
- 4 cups cold milk
- Red food coloring
- Blue food coloring
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- Red, white, and blue sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat your oven according to the cake box directions and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Prepare the white cake batter in a large bowl exactly as the package instructs.
- Divide the batter evenly into three separate bowls; leave one white, tint the second bowl red, and the third bowl blue, stirring until the colors are bright.
- Drop spoonfuls of each colored batter randomly into the prepared baking dish and use a toothpick to gently swirl the colors together.
- Bake as directed on the box, then remove and let the cake cool for approximately 10 minutes.
- Use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes across the entire surface of the warm cake, then allow the cake to cool completely.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the instant cheesecake pudding and cold milk until dissolved.
- Pour the pudding mixture evenly over the cooled cake, ensuring it fills the holes, and chill in the refrigerator until set.
- In a separate bowl, beat the cold heavy cream and vanilla extract to soft peaks, then add powdered sugar and whip to stiff peaks.
- Spread the homemade whipped cream over the pudding layer, top with festive sprinkles, and serve chilled.
Notes
To achieve the cleanest slices, use a sharp knife and wipe it clean with a damp cloth between each cut. For the most vibrant results, use gel-based food coloring which provides deep hues without altering the consistency of the cake batter. This cake is best prepared a few hours in advance, giving the pudding ample time to soak into the sponge for maximum moisture.
