Description

Impress your guests with this patriotic showstopper that reveals a hidden American flag design when sliced. This layered cake uses vibrant colors and clever assembly to create a professional-looking dessert perfect for any summer holiday.

Ingredients

  • 2 boxes white cake mix
  • Water (as per box instructions)
  • Vegetable oil (as per box instructions)
  • Whole eggs (for red layers)
  • Egg whites (for white and blue layers)
  • Red paste food coloring
  • Blue paste food coloring
  • Star-shaped candy sprinkles
  • Whipped fluffy white frosting
  • Red, white, and blue sprinkles for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350°F and line two 8-inch round cake pans with cooking spray and parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the first box of cake mix using whole eggs according to package directions and tint with red food coloring; bake for 28-33 minutes and cool completely.
  3. Clean and prep the pans again, then prepare the second cake mix using only egg whites.
  4. Divide the second batch of batter in half, tinting one half blue with star sprinkles and leaving the other half white; bake both layers and cool for at least one hour.
  5. Trim the tops of all cakes to be flat; slice the red cakes into four thin horizontal layers and the white cake into two thin horizontal layers.
  6. Use a 4-inch cutter to remove the centers from the blue layer and from one layer each of the red and white cakes.
  7. Stack a solid red layer, frosting, a solid white layer, frosting, and another solid red layer to form the base.
  8. Place the blue ring on top and fill the center hole with the 4-inch red circle, a thin layer of frosting, and the 4-inch white circle.
  9. Frost the entire exterior of the cake with whipped frosting and decorate with extra sprinkles.

Notes

To make the assembly easier, try chilling the cake layers in the freezer for 20 minutes before cutting the 4-inch circles; this prevents the cake from crumbling. Using a serrated knife will help you achieve the cleanest cuts for those perfect interior stripes.
