Description

Impress your guests with this patriotic showstopper that reveals a hidden American flag design when sliced. This layered cake uses vibrant colors and clever assembly to create a professional-looking dessert perfect for any summer holiday.

Ingredients

  • 2 boxes white cake mix
  • Water (as per box instructions)
  • Vegetable oil (as per box instructions)
  • Whole eggs (for red layers)
  • Egg whites (for white and blue layers)
  • Red paste food coloring
  • Blue paste food coloring
  • Star-shaped candy sprinkles
  • Whipped fluffy white frosting
  • Red, white, and blue sprinkles for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350°F and line two 8-inch round cake pans with cooking spray and parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the first box of cake mix using whole eggs according to package directions and tint with red food coloring; bake for 28-33 minutes and cool completely.
  3. Clean and prep the pans again, then prepare the second cake mix using only egg whites.
  4. Divide the second batch of batter in half, tinting one half blue with star sprinkles and leaving the other half white; bake both layers and cool for at least one hour.
  5. Trim the tops of all cakes to be flat; slice the red cakes into four thin horizontal layers and the white cake into two thin horizontal layers.
  6. Use a 4-inch cutter to remove the centers from the blue layer and from one layer each of the red and white cakes.
  7. Stack a solid red layer, frosting, a solid white layer, frosting, and another solid red layer to form the base.
  8. Place the blue ring on top and fill the center hole with the 4-inch red circle, a thin layer of frosting, and the 4-inch white circle.
  9. Frost the entire exterior of the cake with whipped frosting and decorate with extra sprinkles.

Notes

To make the assembly easier, try chilling the cake layers in the freezer for 20 minutes before cutting the 4-inch circles; this prevents the cake from crumbling. Using a serrated knife will help you achieve the cleanest cuts for those perfect interior stripes.

The Flavor Stars and Simple Ingredients

To get that vibrant look for our Red, White and Blue Layered Flag Cake, we use accessible ingredients that pack a huge visual punch. Here is what you will need to gather for this colorful project.

  • White Cake Mix: We use two boxes to get the height we need for our flag layers. It provides a clean, sweet canvas for our colors.
  • Red Paste Food Color: This is vital for that deep, rich crimson. Paste color is more concentrated than liquid, so it won’t thin out your batter.
  • Blue Paste Food Color: A small amount creates a bright navy blue that really pops against the white frosting.
  • Star-Shaped Candy Sprinkles: This is our secret flavor pop! Adding these to the blue batter makes the “stars” of our flag actually visible inside the cake texture.
  • Whipped Fluffy White Frosting: I love how light and airy this is. It acts like the perfect snowy backdrop for our red and blue decorations.
  • Whole Eggs and Egg Whites: Notice we use whole eggs for the red layers to keep them rich, but only egg whites for the blue and white layers to keep those colors crisp and pure.
  • Vegetable Oil and Water: These keep our layers moist and tender so every bite is just as good as it looks.

How to Make the Perfect Flag Cake

Step 1: Prep for Success

Heat your oven to 350°F (or 325°F if you are using dark or nonstick pans). Take your two 8-inch round pans and spray the bottoms and sides with cooking spray, then line them with parchment paper. This makes sure our beautiful layers slide right out without any sticking.

Step 2: Mix the Red Layers

In a large bowl, prepare the first box of white cake mix following the package directions, using the water, oil, and whole eggs. Beat in the red food color until you have a vibrant, happy red. Divide the batter evenly between your two pans and bake for 28 to 33 minutes. Let them cool for 10 minutes before moving them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 3: Prep for Round Two

Clean those pans and prep them again with spray and parchment. Now, mix the second box of cake mix using the water, oil, and only the egg whites. This keeps the batter snowy white so our blue stays true and our white layer stays bright.

Step 4: Create the Blue and White Batter

Pour half of the white batter into one of the pans. In the remaining batter, stir in the blue food color and those fun star-shaped sprinkles. Once it is well blended, pour that blue batter into the second pan. Bake these just like the red ones, then let them cool for at least an hour.

Step 5: Perform the Cake Surgery

This is the fun part! Trim the rounded tops off all your cakes so they are flat. Slice your two red cake layers in half horizontally so you have four thin red layers. Use a 4-inch biscuit cutter to cut a circle out of the center of one red layer and the blue layer. Also, slice your white layer in half horizontally and cut a 4-inch circle out of one of those white layers too.

Step 6: Assemble the Magic

Place one solid thin red layer on your platter and spread a little frosting on top. Stack a solid thin white layer on top, followed by more frosting and another solid thin red layer. Now, place the blue cake ring on top of that. Inside that blue ring, place one small 4-inch red circle, a thin layer of frosting, and then the small 4-inch white circle. This creates the “union” of our flag!

Step 7: The Final Frosting

Cover the entire cake with the remaining whipped frosting. Be generous! You want a smooth, white exterior that hides the colorful secret inside. Finish it off with extra red, white, and blue sprinkles on top for a festive touch.

For the most vibrant results, always choose gel or paste food coloring rather than the liquid drops found in the grocery aisle. The colors stay much more stable during the baking process. If you find your cake layers are a bit crumbly while you are cutting the centers out, try popping them in the freezer for about 20 minutes first. Cold cake is much easier to handle and cut cleanly! For another fun way to use these colors, check out our red-white-blue-marble-cake which is great for smaller gatherings. You can also find great inspiration for patriotic bakes on the Betty Crocker website where this classic assembly method was popularized.

Flavor Swaps and Other Fun Pops

You can easily make this recipe your own by playing with the flavors of the cake itself. Try adding a teaspoon of almond extract to the white batter for a sophisticated flavor pop that pairs beautifully with the sweet frosting. If you are baking for a crowd with specific needs, you can look at our gluten-free-american-flag-cake to make sure everyone gets a slice of the fun. Another simple tweak is to swap the white frosting for a light cream cheese frosting if you want a little more tang to balance the sweetness of the cake layers.

Simple Serving and Flavor Pairings

When it is time to serve your Red, White and Blue Layered Flag Cake, I love to keep things simple and fresh. Serve each slice with a handful of fresh blueberries and sliced strawberries to echo the colors inside the cake. A cold glass of sparkling lemonade or even a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream makes this the ultimate summer treat. If you are looking for a lighter option for a hot day, you might also enjoy our american-flag-cake-no-bake-cheesecake which is equally festive but requires zero oven time. Always use a sharp, clean knife for every slice to keep those internal layers looking sharp and beautiful.
